rocket fire directed at israel from hamas-controlled gaza, as well as militants and their supplies. israeli officials say three people are dead, 68 people have been wounded. officials put the gaza death toll at 104 with 860 people wounded. all the while world diplomats constantly are looking for some way to broker a cease-fire. in a little bit, you're going to hear my conversation with one of top negotiators attempting to achieve a cease-fire, the former british prime minister, tony blair. he's here in jerusalem. i spoke with him today. you're going to hear the interview. that's coming up later. we'll also hear from our cnn correspondents across israel as well as in gaza right now. earlier in the day, i went to orbkalon where i saw what was going on firsthand on the israeli side of the border. as soon as we got there, the sirens actually started going on. you could see people running towards shelters. i started running after israeli soldiers demanded that all of us -- our cnn crew, myself, we get to a shelter. usually they have about 30 seconds once the sirens go off before there a

israel and hamas. even with international calls for restraint, preparations for an all-out war are taking place. 65 palestinians and 3 israelis have been killed in five days of air attacks. hamas says ten members of the same family were massacred during an israeli air strike in gaza. israel said it was targeting a top militant. >> air sirens screamed out at times in tel aviv for a third straight day. but two rockets headed for israel's largest city were intercepted. dozens more rockets were fired from gaza into israel including one that hit the town. injured an unsuspecting number of people. meanwhile, egypt and president mohamed morsi say discussions are under way in cairo and arab league foreign ministers are set to visit gaza on tuesday. violence has become a daily nightmare for people living in gaza. anderson cooper joins us now. take us to the ground and what's going on. what you seeing and hearing? >> it's about 2:00 a.m. here. we have heard a number of large explosions this evening. just a few in the last hour or so. this is generally the time when the strikes actually intensify. t

president mohammed morsi an underscore necessity for hamas that the united states consider aster rorrist group. mr. obama talked to the israeli prime minister to get update on the situation. many analysts say unless there is a cease-fire in 48 hours it's uncertain there will be an escalation. shannon? >> shannon: david lee miller live in israel. thank you. we are going to look at the reasons that israel is striking back against gaza furiously right now. national security correspondent jennifer griffin puts the story in per speculative. >> the gaza conflict may be phase one as they prepare for strike against iran nuclear program. conventioconventional wisdom isy will strike back. >> our problem is not our border with gaza, but other country's boarder with gaza. access of the arms that come from iran through sudan. among rockets fired at us come directly from iran. we know the hamster rorrist trained with iranians. strong connection. >> they can reach tel aviv and jerusalem from gaza. in the past year, they smuggled components for the rocket through tunnels from each of the desert to gaza.

the islamist group hamas in retaliation for attacks on their towns and cities. they're considering a ground offensive. israeli military forces are using fighter jets and warships to pound gaza. leaders say they're trying to prevent hamas from firing rockets into israel. the consequences have been deadly. one air strike caused a residential building to collapse. 11 people died including women and children. the six-day offensive has killed more than 90 people. a survey by a leading newspaper says 84% of israeli respondents back the military campaign but only 30% say they would support a ground operation. u.n. secretary general ban ki moon wants to avoid that outcome. he's repeated his call for an immediate ceasefire. egyptian leaders are mediating truce talks between israeli government representatives and hamas. israel's vice prime minister moshe yaalon says his country will halt its offensive if hamas stops firing rockets and missiles at its citizens in terrorist attacks engineered from the gaza strip seas. for more on this, i talked to our middle east correspondent. first off, there have be

flying out of hamas-controlled gaza and the israeli missiles, jets, and bombs flying into it. within the past couple of hours, israeli forces hit a media complex in gaza city for the second time in two days. over six days of the conflict, all too reminiscent of the ground war in 2008. at least 97 palestinians and 3 israelis have been killed. neither side knows when, where, or how the other will strike, and that leads to heart-stopping moments like this one live on cnn last hour with our frederik pleitgen. >> reporter: this town is actually a very interesting one because it is directly in the line of fire, especially from the very short-range rockets and only yesterday what happened was that there -- carol, we have an alarm going off right now. i'm going to have to seek cover. we're going to go over here. let's take the came ra off the tripod. >> you go. you go, you go go go. this always makes me so nervous. >> reporter: you have to get down on the ground and wait for it to pass. just hope it doesn't hit anywhere here. they're telling us to go inside the shop. we'll stay here. all rig

with an israeli army spokesman who said there are also hamas organizations or hamas related infrastructure in that building. that's why they say they're targeting that building. but there are several arabic language news organizations based there. as you point out, carol, this is the second time the israelis have gone after that building. so other than what the israelis are saying, they say there are legitimate targets there, what we're seeing on the ground from our own reporters, that's escalating into a pretty serious development even as diplomats are trying to achieve some sort of cease-fire. when you see what's going on that cease-fire looks increasingly remote. let's see what happens behind the scenes there. >> i have heard, wolf, israel says if there's not some sort of cease-fire agreed to on behalf of gaza that a ground war will begin soon. what are you hearing? >> reporter: well, that's what the israelis are saying. the prime minister of israel, benjamin netanyahu in his cabinet meeting yesterday made that point. they're not going to wait forever. we do know that there have been a

brought a swift and powerful response. israel is focused on taking out hamas' iranian supplied rockets which can travel up to 45 miles, the farthest ever. hamas has been firing rockets for years as a way to end israel's blockade of supplies into gaza. terms of a potential cease-fire are being brokered by egypt, turkey and qatari officials. israeli defense forces targeted a media building in gaza, aiming at four senior hamas operatives they believed were inside. and two people died. it is not clear if they were the ones designated as the hamas targets. hamas, which grew out of the muslim brotherhood, seized in our gaza in 2007. since then, the group has become increasingly militarized. the death toll stands at 100 in gaza including women and children. and three in israel. any others have been wounded on both sides. israel credits its anti-missional defense system known as the iron dome funded by the united states for its low number of deaths. cnn's frederick platkin was live when the system intercepted a rocket midair. >> there, over in the sky, you probably won't be able to see it here

. jon: i'm jon scott. israel gears up for a ground offensive to combat the deadly hamas rocket attacks it too prefers a diplomatic solution to end the dry sis. all this as the death toll rises to nearly one hundred. israel appears to be stepping up its bombing campaign, launching air strikes at key targets in gaza, one hitting the immediate quarters of the palestinian national security forces causing a huge explosion with thick, black smoke seen over gaza city this morning. but hamas not letting up, firing hundreds and hundreds of rockets into israel over the past few days. 75 just today alone. israel's iron dome an antimissile battery intercepting 20 of them. reports today that one did hit a school in southern israel. thankfully, though, it was empty at the time. leland vittert live on the israel-gaza border for us now. leland. >> reporter: jon, we were at that school, there was no kids there, because they don't have snow days here, they have rocket days. today being one of them. behind me in the black abyss is the israeli artillery and their cannons moving about. for the first time t

may be critical in determining which direction israel's going to take in its conflict with hamas militants. despite 30,000 israeli troops massed at the gaza border and tough talk from both sides, there's still a chance for diplomacy. but time is running out. today was the deadliest day yet. israel says it lobbed 130 rockets into gaza, and some reports say up to 29 palestinians were killed today alone, including ten members of the same family. on the other side of the border, air sirens screamed out in several cities. israel says it intercepted dozens of the nearly 150 rockets hamas fired, including two targeted at tel aviv. their shelling is intense on both sides. cnn's anderson cooper witnessed it firsthand. he's been reporting live from gaza city and earlier i was on the air with anderson when a massive explosion took place nearby. watch what happened. >> in that blast we know ten members of one family, also two media centers -- whoa. that was a rather large explosion. that occurred, look out here, i can't actually see where the impact of that was. it's actually set off a numbe

stadium where the israelis said hamas militants were launching rockets to israel. among the other targets, the media center where they say the militants were using communications facilities to get in touch with people on the ground. in total, more than 100 palestinians have been killed. half of them civilians. among them 1 11 civilians. all of them from the same family. most women and children killed from a single airstrike over the weekend. israel says the strike was the result of targeting the home of a rocket mastermind who was working for the militants. meanwhile, the militants in gaza continue to fire rockets in to israel. today, more than 100 rockets were launched. almost half of them were intercepted by the iron dome missile defense system here. nevertheless, two schools were hit. the results could have been catastrophic. but the classes were not in session because of the ongoing conflict. notably there were no rockets launched headed in the direction of tel aviv. lastly, over my shoulder in the distance, you can take a look. see the iron dome system here in southern israel. five b

500 hamas rockets have fallen in israel. israeli air strikes have killed at least 90 gazans. nbc's richard engel, stephanie gosk and ayman mohyeldin are in the region reporting the latest from gaza to tel aviv. first richard engel in gaza, what is the latest from your vantage point and on the cease-fire negotiations? >> we are hearing that there are serious cease-fire negotiations going on right now. when you're on the ground here in gaza it doesn't exactly feel that way. there have been many air strikes today, a media building was killed. israel is sort of -- [ inaudible ] on hamas leader or one palestinian militant at a time. sources who are involved in the israeli/palestinian negotiations working toward a cease-fire, these talks taking place in cairo have told nbc news they are serious, that they are making progress and that this is how the negotiations stand right at this moment. the israelis want a two-part deal, a two-stage deal. the first part would be an immediate hostility, immediate cessation of violence, both sides stop attacking each other. that would be unconditional

and hamas in gaza? or will frantic, behind-the-scenes negotiations, talks in neighboring egypt, help bring an 11th-hour truce? on the ground, the casualties are mounting tonight. in gaza, women, children among the dead as the israelis were trying to target the home of a key militant. many others were hit by that missile. meanwhile, in israel, as families rush to shelters, holes where the hamas rockets have landed. and these images tonight. israel blocking some of those incoming rockets aimed for its most populated cities, knocked down from the sky. part of the so-called iron dome. president obama tonight vowing support, saying israel has a right to defend itself, while at the same time, saying a ramp up in military activity in gaza, a ground war, would be bad for both sides. we have a team in the region covering the middle east on the brink tonight. abc's christiane amanpour and matt gutman in israel. we begin tonight with alex marquardt in gaza city. alex? >> reporter: good evening, david. this was the deadliest day in gaza since this escalation began. in one incident, 11 people were kill

, and the president underscored the necessity of hamas ending fire into israel. that's the latest information. thank you. as i mentioned, more than 100 rockets have been fired from gaza into southern israel. you heard ayman refer to that happening today alone. many rockets fired into israel have been intercepted by the country's missile defense system. it is known as the iron dome. nbc news correspondent stephanie gosk joins me from tel aviv. this missile defense that we talk so much about, stephanie, is significant in many ways. it kept down the loss of life, which certainly would have escalated this crisis far faster than what we're seeing. >> reporter: yeah. it gives them some breathing room. if there was a rocket that landed here in tel aviv that killed a number of people or killed even more people down south besides the three that were killed in one attack, you'd be in a different situation. there would be more public pressure. right now you have tens of thousands troops waiting for the order to go in, and israel's in a position where they could call that order, depending on public pressure and

that it may have amounted to a massacre at the house of one leading member of a hamas militant. according to israel, this is a house belonging to a senior official of hamas, but at the same time there were 12 people inside of that house, including four women and four children. all of them killed. so many people are condemning that attack. meanwhile, it is nighttime here and the people of gaza are bracing themselves for what could be another night of deadly attacks despite the diplomatic activity in cairo. negotiations are under way as well as palestinian factions as to what to do next, but those here in gaza say they are preparing for a ground invasion, and meaning if israel launches a war, they will fight and they are prepared to defend their territory as they say and on the same side israelis say they have finalized preparation for a ground invasion and now it is a matter of a political decision, and certainly something that everybody in cairo is trying to avert, but one that everybody here thinks it is not going to be averted any time soon. thomas? >> well, you talk about the diplomati
